Bears

Lake Mamie, Mammoth Lakes, CA

(Best viewed full screen – the bear is a ways away at first.)

We do have our bears. This beauty we saw in Lake Mamie. Our pup, Lillian, was perched like a mountain goat on a rock at the shore about three feet from where he was camouflaged behind a small bush between them. I saw ‘brown’ that looked strange through that bush… then sharp ears…
We yelled for Lillian to come and I grabbed my iPhone… eventually, after lumbering along in the water on the opposite shore, he began heading across the inlet to the shore we were on. They say bears can run thirty mph or so, so I ran, hoping to not find out.

Bears are often seen at Mountainback in the front yard, out the back windows of our building, and down at the entrance to the garage, where the garbage dumpster is. You can run into them walking in the streets at night but it is very rare. Yell, make a loud noise, bang something, to get them to go away …or stand quietly and watch. If they start heading your way, run.

Don’t pet the bears.
And don’t feed the bears – it enables them to not find food on their own.
